Breast Cancer Tumors Were Destroyed in Less Than 2 Weeks without Chemotherapy by Scientists in Netherlands
Every medical study that shows a probable cure for cancer is very important.
Recently, one such study was carried out in Europe. It dealt with breast cancer, which is the most common type of cancer among women. In the United States, one in eight women will have this type of cancer in her lifetime. Fortunately, this study carried out in Amsterdam can find a cure for breast cancer in the near future.
The breast cancer cure
On the conference about breast cancer that happened in Amsterdam, Professor Nigel Bundred presented a study about how the drugs Lapatinib and tratuzumab or Herceptin influence breast cancer.
These drugs are common drugs that are used against breast cancer. However, these two drugs were never before used in combination. Moreover, they were never used before surgery and chemotherapy treatments. The scientists were able to destroy some breast cancer types with this new treatment in just 11 days.
The researchers used these drugs to destroy a protein called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 or HER2. This protein affects the division and the growth of breast cancer cells.
This new treatment is also so beneficial as the patients will not need surgery and chemotherapy. This treatment affects the body less as well, as there are no side effects such as fatigue, vomiting and hair loss. This alternative treatment is pretty welcomed as traditional chemotherapy treatments are not suitable for all cancer patients and they can often be ineffective.
The results of this study
The study was carried out on 257 women who were positive on HER2 breast cancer. Half of the women were given the new combined treatment, while the other half served as a control group. The results showed that 11% of the women who underwent the treatment had no cancer after 2 weeks and 17% of them had tumors that have shrunken.
In the control group, the women were given only Herceptin. There were no cases that were breast cancer free, while only 3% of the women had shrunken tumors. So, the effects of these drugs are far more better when they are used in combination.
The results cannot be further analyzed as Herceptin is only allowed for use in combination with chemotherapy.
However, this discovery is very important and it may be the next step towards the end of breast cancer.
